About
Fife is rich in heritage, vibrant in spirit and forward-looking
in attitude.
From the major businesses who choose to locate here, to the students who come for a world-class education, the golf enthusiasts who come to tee off in the footsteps of champions and those who come for a fantastic holiday, Fife keeps people coming back again and again.
Marine influences
Situated between two of Scotland’s cities, Edinburgh and Dundee, Fife enjoys spectacular river and sea views to three sides. This closeness to marine influences has certainly shaped Fife.
The north and east coast is peppered with romantic pan-tiled fishing villages from a bygone age when the sea provided food and work for Fife’s rural coastal communities. To the south the villages give way to an industrial heartland where ship-building, mining and heavy engineering were once the mainstay of the economy.
Heritage
Ancient castles, royal dwellings and religious abbeys can be found all over Fife, where you can trace the royal history of Fife, the political scandals and the social evolution.
St Andrews can claim the title of the 'home of golf' being the site of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club and the Old-Course, and to have the oldest university in Scotland (third-oldest in the English-speaking world) thanks to its 600-year history.
The future
The University of St Andrews encourages the pursuit of academic excellence and attracts students from across the globe. It is at the leading edge of innovative research and development, which is helping establish Fife as an enterprising and innovative location.
One such area where Fife is leading the way is in renewable energy and low-carbon technology. This can be seen in the development of Energy Park Fife which is helping Fife in the pursuit of wind and low carbon energy production.
