The award-winning Fife app 'In the Footsteps of Kings', developed by Fife Tourism Partnership, has hit over 2000 downloads since it's launch last summer.
The app brings history to life and is aimed at families with kids aged between 3-13 years, allowing them to interact with characters and be immersed in an augmented reality experience at nine locations throughout the Kingdom. The trail guides visitors along royal paths and connects them with ancient landmarks including Ravenscraig Castle, Lochore Castle, MacDuff's Castle and Markinch Church, each with a unique game to play.
Free to download to smartphone or tablet, the app promotes Fife's royal ancestors in a series of ‘footsteps’, offering families a fun, educational experience to enjoy in beautiful locations. It also provides information on local businesses near the trail, including cafes, restaurants, hotels and B&Bs, to give visitors an enhanced experience.
The app which was developed by Augmented Reality (AR) company, AliveLab, also won the prestigious Innovation Award at the 2019 Family Attraction Expo.
Cllr Ian Cameron, Fife Council's Tourism Spokesperson, said: “This is a major milestone for the app and we're delighted it's continued to prove popular, even during lockdown. It's great to see that locals have been exploring what's on their doorstep, and how technology can integrate and enhance our outdoor activities. In the Footsteps of Kings offers a fantastic experience for families to enjoy together combining fresh air, fun and historical facts.”
