“THE PLAYERS ARE INDIVIDUALLY BRILLIANT, BUT THEIR INTERPLAY IS PROFOUND” [SUNDAY TIMES]

Scottish tunes (Arr Donald Grant)
A hidden thread runs through quite a few concerts this year: music that blurs boundaries between different genres, most commonly classical, folk and jazz. Schubert, Dvorak, Azar, Otieno… and we open with two great examples: Sally Beamish, inspired by the double life of Elias Quartet’s Donald Grant (fiddler as well as violinist) to create an atmospheric, moody quartet drawing on Pibroch. Haydn’s entire output is dotted with folk tunes and influences, and Op 33 No 5 is one of his most enjoyable quartets.
