Fife Golf Trust completes one of Scotland's most ambitious nature-friendly transformations.

8 Oct 2026

Fife Golf Trust has strengthened its position as one of Scotland’s leading sustainable golf operators through a major programme of environmental improvements delivered across its seven public courses.

As part of the award‑winning Seven Golf Courses for Nature initiative, supported by the Nature Restoration Fund, the Trust has completed one of the most ambitious nature‑positive transformations seen in Scottish golf.

Over the past two years, the Trust has implemented a comprehensive programme of habitat creation and ecological enhancement designed to restore biodiversity, improve natural resilience and embed long‑term environmental stewardship into everyday course management.

Key achievements include:

• 10,000 native trees planted

• 1 km of new hedgerows creating vital habitat corridors

• 17 hectares of species‑rich grassland introduced to support pollinators and improve soil health

• Seven new wetlands and five ponds constructed to enhance water environments

• Naturalisation of freshwater ditches to improve water quality and support aquatic species

• Removal of fencing to improve wildlife movement across the landscape

Every course now features newly created bee banks, alongside owl and bat boxes installed to encourage protected species and strengthen biodiversity.

Expert‑Led Environmental Management

The Trust worked closely with ecological specialist Johanna Willi of Edelweiss Consulting, whose ecological surveys, habitat assessments and intervention design ensured all actions were grounded in environmental best practice and delivered maximum ecological impact.

David Gray, Courses Manager at Fife Golf Trust, said:

“These improvements demonstrate the scale of what public golf can achieve when sustainability is placed at the heart of operations. Our teams have worked tirelessly to create nature‑rich courses that benefit wildlife, golfers and the wider community.”

National Recognition for Environmental Leadership

The Trust’s environmental programme builds on its long‑standing GEO Certification and commitment to nature‑based solutions, reduced inputs and modern, efficient maintenance practices. Its leadership has been widely recognised, securing:

• Best Sustainability Project — Scottish Golf Tourism Awards

• Impact and Innovation Award — Scottish Golf Awards

• Commendations from VIBES Scottish Environment Business Awards

• Commendations from the RSPB for habitat creation and biodiversity enhancement

These accolades were awarded in competition with some of Scotland’s most prestigious venues, including Royal Dornoch and Carnoustie Golf Links, underscoring the exceptional standard of the Trust’s achievements.

Looking Ahead

With further investment planned, Fife Golf Trust aims to continue leading the way in sustainable public golf, demonstrating how municipal courses can deliver environmental excellence alongside high‑quality playing conditions
