The village cottages were arranged in rows and were built primarily for the workers of Lord Elgin. The community benefitted from a school, granary, blacksmith village hall, laundry bakery, dairy, inn, sawmill and village green. There was also an extensive rail network used for passengers and goods, a brickworks and an iron foundry.
