Pittenweem is a traditional East Neuk fishing port rather than a seaside resort, with its historic working harbour home to a fleet of fishing boats, trawlers and small creel boats. However, this only adds to the town’s enduring charm and lively atmosphere, especially during Pittenweem Arts Festival, which takes place every summer.

Time your visit well to watch the sun rising to the south of Pittenweem Harbour or, at the end of the day, dipping below the horizon at the north end of the harbour wall in a blaze of red and pink.

There are many places to eat in Pittenweem, including Pittenweem Fish & Chip Bar and seafood restaurant, The Dory Bistro. The Fife Coastal Path goes right by the door of Pittenweem Ice Cream Shop, giving walkers a good excuse to stop for a sweet treat! Chocolate lovers can indulge their cravings with a visit to The Pittenweem Chocolate Company’s Cocoa Tree Café, which takes great pride in adding chocolate to as many dishes and drinks on the menu as possible.

For those who prefer savoury to sweet, the St Andrews Farmhouse Cheese Company makes – and sells – its award-winning cheeses at nearby Falside Farm. Book an appointment to watch St Andrews Farmhouse Cheese being made before tucking into a cheese platter with cheese scones.

A local group, the West Braes Project, renovated, re-opened and runs the town’s crazy golf course, which now has the added attraction of a neighbouring putting green. The West Braes Project was also responsible for saving Pittenweem’s 130-year-old outdoor swimming pool, which is on the beach and is filled twice a day by the tide. The pool reopened in 2021 after being left to the ravages of the sea for decades and is now the place to go for a dip in Pittenweem!
